Transdev Diesel Mechanic C in Lorton, Virginia

OVERVIEW:

Performs routine maintenance on equipment and determines when and what kind of maintenance is

needed. Conducts tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or

performance. Installs equipment, engines, hoses, batteries, tires, wheels/brakes, HVAC, wiring,

etc., or programs to meet specifications. Watches gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure

equipment is working properly. Service, repairs, adjusts, and tests machines, devices, moving

parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical principles. Inspects

equipment, structures, etc., of materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or

defects. Analyzes information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.

DUTIES:

  1. Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.

  2. Align front ends and suspension systems.

  3. Attach test instruments to equipment and read dials and gauges in order to diagnose

malfunctions.

  1. Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions,

clutches, and differential units.

  1. Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.

  2. Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure

that they are in proper operating condition.

  1. Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps

and compressors.

  1. Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test

instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.

  1. Operate valve-grinding machines to grind and reset valves.

  2. Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment

and machinery.

  1. Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.

  2. Installs or rebuilds diesel engines.

  3. Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.

  4. Repair and adjust seats, doors, and windows, and install and repair accessories.

  5. Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.

  6. Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory

specifications.

  1. Specialize in repairing and maintaining parts of the engine, such as fuel injection systems.

  2. Test drive trucks and buses to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working

properly.

  1. Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision

instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, and

jacks and hoists.

  1. Other duties to ensure the safe operation and efficiency of the department.

REQUIREMENTS:

Mechanic C: 1-2 years experience. Must be able to diagnose and repair some of the vehicles and

equipment in service with supervision. The Mechanic C must be willing to learn more difficult tasks

from Mechanic A and B. Will work under direct supervision.

The Mechanic C must be willing to learn more difficult tasks from Mechanic As as well as perform

other duties to ensure the safe operation and efficiency of the department. The Mechanic C must

possess a CDL license or permit with air brakes and a passenger endorsement. If the Mechanic C has

only a permit, he/she will be required to obtain a current and valid CDL license with air brakes

and a passenger endorsement within ninety

(90) calendar days of being hired. The Mechanic C will work under direct supervision.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representatives of those that must be met by the employee

  • 10% of work is accomplished in doors and in air conditioned or well-ventilated

facilities.

  • 90% of work is accomplished outside in varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions;

most work is performed alone and in remote locations.

  • Frequently stands and walks; ability to sit for up to three hours; walk for long distances and

on possible sloped ground or slippery and uneven surfaces; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand

coordination; ability to lift or handle material weighing up to 50 to 75 lbs. without assistance;

ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch; and corrected hearing and vision to normal range;

verbal communication.

  • Exposure to heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job.

  • Exposure to considerable amounts of dust, vehicle fumes and noise.

  • Exposure to cleaning solutions, oils, and other liquids.

  • Must be able to travel for company training, meeting or support missions.
